Suicide Prevention Research

Patrick has commissioned research into suicide and suicide prevention. The work is being carried out with a view to identifying key triggers to suicide and how suicide can be prevented or made more difficult.

Findings so far suggest that the decision to commit suicide is often quite spontaneous and that most people who have survived it don’t try it again.

Patrick said, “The research suggests that if we can make it more difficult for people to commit suicide in the moment of decision then we can save lives because the research suggests that for the majority of suicidal people, once the moment has passed they will not try it again.”

In the UK more than three times as many people commit suicide as die on the road. It is the leading cause of death for 20-35 year olds with 26% of male deaths and 13% of female deaths occurring this way.
