Design Celebrities Survey

November 2007

Patrick was invited to take part in a survey which asked ‘design celebrities’ to select products which, in their opinion, are truly great designs.

Pat chose Levi’s 501 jeans. He said “The basic design is now almost 120 years old, yet is still as popular as ever. This is a remarkable achievement considering how quickly many clothes go in and out of fashion. They are tough, practical and stylish, last forever and look better as they get older. They are worn by both men and women and people of all ages and all socio-economic classes all over the world making them a truly universal product.”

The results of the survey, which is being conducted by the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology will be published next year.

World Usability Day

November 2007

Patrick was keynote speaker at this year’s World Usability Day event in Sweden. He spoke about the Four Pleasures and the future of user-centred design.

As well as giving a talk, Patrick also supported the event as lead sponsor. He said, “to be successful in today’s marketplace and the marketplace of the future, it is essential that we have a through understanding of users. We need to know their needs and deliver these through the product. That means good usability, but also going beyond that to create products that connect with people emotionally.”

One of these papers will report key results from the European Funded driving project for which Pat is consulting in collaboration with Volvo and Chalmers University. The other, which is being delivered as a workshop, will look at design and emotion and how to design products to optimise the user experience.

Airlines Study

November 2007

The first round of Patrick’s independently funded study looking at people’s experiences with airlines has been completed. This compared people’s experiences with different airlines and identified the factors most likely to determine whether people found these experiences positive or negative.

The behaviour of the flight crew was the biggest single issue that influenced people’s view of an airline, followed by the quality of the food, the comfort of the seats and the quality of entertainment. Punctuality was next, followed by cost, the booking procedure and the experience of checking in.

Driving Study

November 2007

Patrick has designed a major survey as part of the European driving project which is being carried out in collaboration with Volvo and Chalmers University. The survey is currently being administered in four countries – the UK, Sweden, China and the USA.

The survey, which looks at drivers’ attitudes, behaviours and their relationship with safety is one of the most comprehensive cross-cultural studies of its type. Initial results are expected in the first quarter of 2008.
