Driving Paper
August 2008

An academic paper, co-authored by Patrick, is to be published in the prestigious International Journal of Design. The paper reports a study conducted at Chalmers University in Sweden on the subject of advanced driver assistance systems and their potential to improve driver safety. The lead author is Anders Lindgren.
Patrick said, “I am delighted to be working with the team at Chalmers. Being published in the International Journal of Design is a tremendous achievement and reflects the quality of research that the team has done.”
Patrick and the Chalmers researchers are looking at the potential of new technology to improve driving safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries on the road. The research is government funded and is being carried out in collaboration with Volvo.
Driver Segmentation Validated
August 2008
Patrick’s driver segmentation has been validated using a statistical analysis. The segmentation looks at differences between people in terms of the way that they drive and, in particular, their attitudes towards safety and speed.
He said, “Segmenting drivers is vital if we are to improve safety on the road. It is essential that we understand differences between people and the way they drive so that we can target solutions effectively, both in terms of in-car safety technology and the messages that we send.
The segmentation was originally compiled on the basis of expert opinion among world-leading driving researchers. The statistical analysis confirmed significant differences between the segments in their attitudes and behaviours on the road.
A paper describing the segmentation is available. Please contact us for a free copy.
University College Symposium
August 2008
It has been confirmed that Patrick will give a seminar on the 2008/2009 Masters course in Human Computer Interaction at University College London. Patrick will be talking on the subject of the Four Pleasures.
He said, “If we are to make interacting with computers and other devices a positive experience it is vital that we have an in-depth understanding of the people that use them. This seminar will give students the tools they need to gain that understanding and to make a positive impact throughout their careers."
As well as his association with University College Patrick, who was recently made an Associate Lecturer at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, currently has visiting lectureships a number of other internationally renowned universities including Brunel, Cranfield, Bath, Chalmers and Lund.
