Conference Websites Updated

July 2008

The conference website for From Visions to Solutions, to be held in Estonia on 11-12 September 2008, has recently been updated. Patrick will be talking about lifestyle trends and their potential consequences for the future of information and communication technology.

The website for InnoLatvia 2008: Design in Services is also online. This will be held in Riga on 30 October 2008. In this talk Patrick will be assessing the impact of lifestyle trends on service design, and looking at how to create a great service experience. He says, "When it comes to quality of service consumers have become more and more demanding -- and righly so. To provide the customer with the best service we need to really care about and understand them. We must get to know their lifestyles and be aware of the issues that effect their quaility of experience."

Driver Segmentation Analysis

July 2008

The initial results have been returned from the driver segmentation study that Patrick is leading as part of a project with Chalmers University in Sweden. The international study, involving hundreds of drivers, looks at the differences between them in terms of attitudes and driving styles and at the effect that these have on accident rates and safety.

So far, the data supports a segmentation model of four distinct types of driver. 'Diligent' drivers are confident but careful; 'Progressive' drivers are confident and quick; 'Cautious' drivers are nervous and may lack confidence; and 'Reckless' drivers speed and take insufficient care on the road.

Patrick will be presenting these results at Applied Ergonomics International 2008 which is being held this month in Las Vegas.

Airlines Case Study

July 2008

As part of his study into quality of experience within the airline industry, Patrick will be analysing the consumer experience on a transatlantic US Airways flight.

In the first round of the study in which more than 2000 people participated, US Airways was the top ranked airline in the States.

Patrick said, “It will be interesting to see if US Airways live up the favourable ratings that they got in our study. I am going to fly with them from London to Las Vegas, analyse every aspect of the trip and see what we can learn about how to optimise the user experience.”

The results of the case study will be presented at Applied Ergonomics International 2008.
