Patrick has completed five new papers which will appear in the proceedings of this year’s Applied Ergonomics International conference which will be held in Las Vegas in July this year.

The papers include one about the highly successful design framework ‘The Four Pleasures’. Patrick said, “After ten years of usage by many of the world’s leading companies and organizations, the Four Pleasures has become established as the benchmark of excellence in terms of understanding consumers. This paper is fully updated with lots of examples and should be of interest to all in the design and marketing professions.”

More New Publications

March 2008

The other four papers are also available free from us on request. They are as follows.

Lifestyle Trends. Eight trends that are shaping the way that we live and the marketplace. This paper reviews what the trends are and their implications for design and marketing.

The Dream Economy. In an era of sophisticated ‘superconsumers’ companies need to find new ways of connecting with people in order to create winning products. This paper looks at the best examples demonstrating how it can be done.

Airline Travel and Consumers. This paper ranks airlines in terms of the consumer experience that they offer. The best and worst airlines are identified and the factors which affect people’s experiences are discussed.

Drivers and Driving. A segmentation is presented showing how people differ in terms of their driving style and attitudes. The effects on road safety are discussed and an overview is given of in-car systems designed to enhance driver performance.

Interview Online

March 2008

An interview with Patrick has appeared on the Swedish design blog site ‘In Useful’. The interview discusses his views on user-centred design and previews his talk at the Business to Buttons event in Malmo in June.

Discussing the relevance to design of his background in psychology Patrick said, “Effective design and branding requires a deep understanding of those that you are trying to reach and connect with. As a discipline which is dedicated to understanding people, psychology has a lot to contribute here as do the other social sciences.”

Responsible Packaging

March 2008

Speaking to the press after his presentations at this year’s Packaging Innovations event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, Patrick acknowledged some excellent developments within the field but also sounded a note of caution.

He said, “At the moment packaging tends to be getting a bad press. Many, perhaps most, of the public see packaging as environmentally damaging and think that companies are irresponsible when they 'overpackage' things. Companies should go out of their way to demonstrate that they are taking a responsible attitude towards packaging and only using what is necessary.”
