Researching Bling!
October 2009

Patrick will be visiting the design centre at Lund University in November this year. He will be giving a lecture, critiquing the work of Masters students and advising on the PhD research program.
An area being pioneered by Lund researchers Despina Christoforidou and Elin Olander is ‘bling’. Patrick said, “Bling is about designs that enable overt displays of socio-economic status. Some may find it vulgar, others find it honest, affirming and fun. Whatever view you take of bling, there is no doubt that the work that Lund are doing in this area is groundbreaking and I am delighted to have the opportunity to be involved.”
Brunel University Lecture
October 2009
Patrick is to give a lecture and seminar at Brunel University on the Product Design BSc course. The lecture will look at design, brand and marketing and their role in helping a company to succeed in the marketplace.
Patrick said, “I have been associated with Brunel University for many years now in a guest lecturing and advisory capacity. In that time, I have seem them develop into one of the world’s leading design schools. Their success is a reflection of the foresight, dedication and vision of the course leaders. They have created a program which brings together the best of industry and academia and establishes a world-class standard of educational excellence.”
UCL Seminar Confirmed
October 2009
It has been confirmed that Patrick will give a seminar on this year’s MSc course in Human-Computer Interaction at University College London. The lecture will focus on understanding users and will be structured around the Four Pleasures.
He said, “Having a deep understanding of users is absolutely central to creating websites and other screen-based applications which give a positive user experience and convey the company’s brand in an effective way. It’s great that UCL put such an strong emphasis on this issue and give their graduates the tools and skills which will make them highly effective in the commercial environment.”
